Immortal – Live At Wacken 2007:The Seventh Date of Blashyrkh

Having an Immortal at Wacken DVD is a real treat for me because I know that I’m going to get a concert that actually looks and sounds like a live show. No ridiculously quick cuts or overly obvious tricks, no overdubs, nothing. The stuff that comes out of Wacken Open Air is consistently awesome and this is definitely no exception. The show is shot beautifully, the editing done flawlessly without making your head spin, and the band plays a solid set.

The Acacia Strain – The Most Known Unknown DVD

The Acacia Strain have the dubious distinction of being one of the original ‘deathcore’ bands, spawning a whole load of crappy imitations over the years. Thankfully, The Acacia Strain are still head and shoulders above all of their competition and live they really shine. Yes, the editing is quite jarring, but at the same time I think it gives an accurate feeling to being at one of The Acacia Strain’s shows: loud, hectic, and effectively putting the viewer off balance.

Hellbound audio interview: Craig Goldy (DIO)

Jason Wellwood had the chance to speak to onetime DIO guitarist Craig Goldy, who played in the band in the late 80s. Jason spoke to Craig earlier this month about the recent DIO live album Dio At Donington UK: Live 1983 & 1987. The latter show was Craig’s first major festival appearance as a member of DIO, and reminisces about both the performance and that first European tour in this three part interview.

You may remember that about a month ago Hellbound published an interview that Jason Wellwood did with the one and only Phil Anselmo. This interview was originally done for Mr. Wellwood’s radio show “Blowing Up The Lakehead”, which airs each and every Monday night on CILU FM in Thunder Bay. Since it was so successful on the site – it is now our number two most read article of all-time – we jumped at the chance to also put up the audio files of the entire interview when Mr Wellwood offered.

Invasion – Orchestrated Kill Maneuver

I’m not familiar with Invasion but I want to be! This album is pulverizing right out of the gate. Sonically, it’s intense and to a degree, even a little painful! Intercut with news reports from WWII, Orchestrated Kill Maneuver is brutal and unrelenting.

James LaBrie – Static Impulse

Static Impulse was definitely crafted very carefully; there is an attention to detail that many bands these days (and more so artists putting out solo records to stretch from their band a little) just don’t get. Again, the album sounds like it was recorded by a band, the song writing is excellent and all the musicians put in a terrific performance. Labrie and Guillory have definitely outdone themselves this time.

Neverland – ophidia

For my money, I’d pass on this record. It isn’t awful but it’s really isn’t very good either. The pieces are in place for a good record but they need to find a much better guitar tone, help the singer find his niche (or write in a more comfortable key) and reign in the keyboardist.
